Academic Calendar
Academic calendar shall mean a list of academic activities arranged in a chronological order for one academic year.
Without prejudice to the School of Medicine and other academic units using a system of annual rather than semester course offerings, modular course offerings, as well as continuing and distance education programs, a normal semester at the University shall be 16 weeks of classes plus one week break before exams, and a summer/kiremt semester of 8-12 weeks.
At the University, a regular academic year commences on September and ends on June.
Summer semesters shall begin on July 01 and end on September 7.
In summer semesters, students shall only be carrying … _ of the normal semester load.
The duration of modular course offerings shall depend upon the ECTS/credit assigned to every modular course.
The duration of semesters for special in-service programs shall be determined according to the needs of every such program.
The Calendar for each year shall be prepared by the University Registrar in consultation with the AVP and approved by the Senate.
Academic Programs
1. Undergraduate Programs
There are three categories of Academic programs offered at AAU: first degree (B.Sc. or B.A.), second degree (M.Sc. or M.A.) and third degree (Ph.D.). Specialty certificates are also given for those who have an M.D and served for a reasonable period of time. Specialty certificates are given under the College of Health Sciences. Currently, the following Undergraduate programs are available in the different colleges and institutes of the AAU.
2. Graduate Program
The University offers programs of study and research leading to Master of Arts (M.A.), Master of Education (M.Ed.), Master of Science (M.Sc.), Master of Law (LL.M), Master of Business Administration (MBA), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and similar other graduate degrees as well as programs leading to specialty and sub-specialty certificates in medicine or other similar programs. The following Graduate programs are available in the different colleges and institutes of AAU.
Registration
After a student is admitted to one of the programs of the university, the next thing to do is registration for a set of modules/courses.
A student who fails to maintain continuous registration without officially withdrawing from a program shall be considered to have dropped out of the program.
Registration takes place in the college/institute/school registrar office.
During registration, students should observe the following registration rules and procedures:
- A student, whose application for admission to a program is accepted, can be registered according to the academic calendar.
- The registration slips should be completed and signed by the advisor.
Academic Matters
Semester Load for Undergraduate Regular (Non-Clinical) Students
1. The minimum workload required for undergraduate regular student shall be 30 ECTS per semester and the maximum shall not exceed 35 ECTS. The relevant VP office shall provide a rule to accommodate the pace of special need students.
2. A student with CGPA of 2.50 or above and wishing to deviate from sub-Article 90.1 requirement shall obtain a special permission from the head of the department in which he is doing his major work, or from the executive dean of his college, and approved by the AC. The maximum workload with special permission may not, however, exceed 35 ECTS.
3. Notwithstanding the provisions of sub-Article 90.1 hereof, a graduating student with CGPA of 2.00 and above may be granted special permission to take up to 35 ECTS.
ASSESSMENTS AND EXAMINATIONS
General Provisions on Examinations
1. learning shall be assessed in a variety of ways including continuous assessment in the form of tests, assignments, presentations, etc. To determine the final grade earned results of the continuous assessment and one final exam/summative assessment with a weight of not greater than 50% will be used. Instructors shall monitor the student’s academic performance by keeping track of records.
2. Examinations may be oral, written or practical, depending on the nature of the module/course. However, in those cases where examinations are conducted orally, a written record of the student’s performance and the basis for the determination of grades shall be kept by the instructor.

Discontinuing Study
Dismissal
A student may be forced to discontinue his/her study because of academic reasons for at least one semester. One of these academic reasons is a “dismissal” status of a student. Such type of discontinuity may allow a readmission in which a student will be readmitted to repeat the modules/courses he/she failed. A student with a “dismissal” status should formally withdraw from the university.
Dropout
Students dropping out from the University must consult their academic advisors and explain why they wish to drop out. Students dropping out from the University for inadequate reasons will be denied readmission.
Withdrawal
Any student who wants to discontinue his study should formally withdraw and complete Withdrawal Form (or clearance) within 8 weeks after the beginning of the semester. The University does not accept readmission requests if an applicant has not withdrawn properly.

Students are required to fulfill a minimum set of achievements to graduate (get a degree) from a program. Such requirements can vary from program to program. For specific information, students are advised to consult the specific curriculum in which they are enrolled. However, the following general requirements apply to a first degree program:
